Shorebird Identification Class

One of the most confusing families of birds is the shorebird family (Scolopacidae & Charadriidae) with their similar plumage, habitat, and feeding behavior. Since they often form migration and feeding flocks together, it may seem difficult or even impossible to tell them apart. This online class will point out tips and tricks of behavior and field marks to help separate the individual species and genus in order to better understand the importance and diversity of this special group of birds.  

Ian Batterman has been bird watching since the age of six and has seen/heard over 585 bird species in 24 states since then. Ian is a graduate of University of Wisconsin with a degree in Zoology, and he is a Lead Training Educator at Loveland Living Planet Aquarium in Draper, Utah. He is also the current compiler of the Salt Lake Christmas Bird Count and the former Field Trip Coordinator for Great Salt Lake Audubon. When he isn't working or birding, he spends time with his wife and 9 pets.

This class will be geared to the experienced birder. 

The class will be on Zoom. GEAS volunteers will lead a shorebird field trip open only to class registrants on April 2. The location will be determined closer to the class date.  The field trip sign-up link will be provided after you register for the class. All registrants will be provided a link to the class recording.

This class is open to everyone.

• Non-members - $30
• GEAS current (as of date of registration) members - $20
• GEAS members who have made a membership payment or a donation of $250 - free
